The Story Behind How Kyrs Media Started

entry DATE:

The beginning of Kyrs Media

If you read my last journal entry, you would have got to know a little about me and who I am, but you haven’t gotten to know Kyrs Media, AKA the other half of my heart!

If you’ve been following me for a while, you would know Kyrs Media started in March 2021. We didn’t start as a brand and web design studio though, we actually started as a social media management company. We didn’t become a full brand and web design studio until the beginning of April 2024, so three years later. It’s been such a fun journey figuring out what I want this business of mine to be, but let’s start at the beginning of this whole journey! This is probably going to be a bit lengthy, so you might want to cozy up on the couch with a coffee or a snack!

From the beginning of time (aka the beginning of my adulthood haha)…

I graduated from a community college with a Graphic Imaging Technology diploma (fancy words for Graphic Design) in May of 2020 – and before you ask, no I did not get to have a graduation ceremony sadly, thank you c0r0na. A couple of months later, I was hired at a local graphic design company as a Production Assistant. This company was where I had wished to work after graduating college, it was the most popular graphic design company in my town!

As you can imagine, I was stoked!!

Even though the job wasn’t what I was looking for, since it had no graphic design in the job description, I thought that I could work myself up to a graphic design position. To give you a little glimpse into what my production assistant position entailed – I counted apparel, prepped them for embroidery, and ran the embroidery machines (sometimes six at the same time). A factory job is what it was, which I learned very quickly was not what I wanted to do for a career.

Fast forward a few months, they moved me into the office where I started to do graphic design work! It was exactly what I had hoped would happen… until I realized I still felt unfulfilled. So, I sought out on my journey to find the thing that would light my soul on fire!

One day I was scrolling on TikTok (of course) and I came across one of Jessica Hawks’ TikTok videos where she was announcing that today was the last day to join her Social Media Manager Masterclass for a huge discount! At that time, I didn’t even know what a Virtual Assistant was (like I had never even heard of it), but I immediately enrolled myself!

That following Sunday, I attended her class. For seven hours, I was captivated, soaking up knowledge like a sponge and jotting down notes. As the class concluded, a sense of peace washed over me. I was electrified and brimming with motivation! At that moment, I knew I had found my calling – I was to become a Social Media Manager, a freelancer, and a business owner (which is something I NEVER thought of for myself)!

That same month (March of 2021 to be exact), I went from having zero knowledge of a Social Media Manager to filing for an LLC, posting on my new biz IG (you do not want to see those old posts), and having all the backend ready to go for when I got clients! I’m going to be transparent with you though… I didn’t get a single client until the following January. Although it was hard to not immediately get clients, I stuck with it and eventually, it paid off! A year later from starting my business (March 2022), I was able to quit my job at the graphic design company and start working full-time for myself!

2022 was filled with so many clients, some photographers, some not. It was exciting, thrilling, and so much fun! I rebranded later that year receiving a whole new branding suite, took my first brand photos, and started designing my own website! Working on my website led me to fall in LOVE with web design (and following along with Becca Luna on IG, iykyk). I ended up purchasing all of her web design courses… If you’ve learned anything from this story its that I love a good online masterclass and course (college who?)!

In March 2023 (March is obviously a big month for my biz haha), I launched my website and started offering web design services for photographers! I was able to design for my first web design client just a couple of months later… and then the design side of my business went quiet. I was still continuously working with my SMM clients, gaining new ones, but not a word from someone who seriously wanted to invest in me for their web design.

I had fallen in love with design though, so much so that I designed two mockup websites to continue to practice my skills. I started to crave more of the design world and could feel myself drifting away from social media management. So, in November 2023 I decided that I was going to change things up… rebrand if you will. I started scrolling on Pinterest, finding inspiration for this new brand I wanted to create MYSELF, curating a color palette, accumulating a list of fonts I liked, and designing new logos.

I fell off the whole rebrand process during Christmas and January of that year because of the obvious holiday season and having my first big web design project! (It’s like as soon as I made the shift in my head to a brand and web designer, someone noticed it and decided to trust and invest in me!) I picked things back up with my rebrand in March 2024, working with a brand strategist and copywriter, designing my new website, and getting ready to make this switch!

When I am writing this journal entry, I am about to launch my new rebrand of Kyrs Media tomorrow (April 4, 2024) as a brand and web design studio for passionate women entrepreneurs – what a long time coming!

I want to say that I am so thankful for this journey that has gotten me to where I am today and that I am so excited for what is to come! I still have a lot of growing to do, but I’m thankful for the opportunity to do so!

I simply have never been happier in my business than where I am right now! I feel so aligned with it all and am eager to work with such sweet, kind people!

Thanks for reading this EXTRA LONG journal entry, it could literally be a book haha! I do hope that it inspired you in some kind of way, if so, you should definitely send me a DM on Instagram @kyrsmedia – ttyl!
